Advanced DTMF features

Although speech recognition represents the main focus of applications in Voice Platform, you still have the option of using DTMF (touch-tone) as caller input, or producing DTMF output.

This section describes three advanced DTMF features that you may find useful:

  • The DTMF type-ahead feature allows power users to enter a sequence of DTMF tones to navigate directly through a sequence of menus. The tones are buffered and are used by the application to navigate through the menus without actually presenting each menu to the user. This improves usability by letting power users go directly and quickly to what they want.
  • Including DTMF in a hot word grammar allows you to enable DTMF input during hot word recognition. Users can speak the hot word or press a specified DTMF key. This feature is useful where noisy environments might reduce recognition accuracy or where users do not use speech.
  • Producing DTMF output allows your application to interact with other systems that require DTMF input. For example, a transfer may require your application to enter an extension number in order to make the appropriate connection.
