Localization reference

This section provides information about localizing the Nuance® Voice Platform for Speech Suite 11 (Voice Platform) to deploy applications in locales other than North American English. A locale can identify a specific language, for example, English, or a more-specific language/region combination, for example, Australian/New Zealand English, North American English, or U.K. English.

Voice Platform is, by default, configured for North American English deployments. This means:

  • The primary locale is set to en-US on the Voice Browser service during installation
  • The character encoding is determined by the Voice Browser service property, browser.characterEncoding. If not set, the default is the system encoding of the machine, which is ISO 8859-1 in most Latin-based language countries.
  • The default installed language for recognition is North American English
  • The default installed voice for text-to-speech (TTS) is Samantha, a female North American English voice
  • System prompts for the Voice Browser service are provided in North American English
  • VoiceXML built-in universal grammars are provided in North American English
